Oaksford & Chater (O&C) rely on a data fitting approach to show that a Bayesian model captures the core reasoning data better than its logicist rivals. The problem is that O&C's modeling has focused exclusively on response output data. I argue that this exclusive focus is biasing their conclusions. Recent studies that focused on the processes that resulted in the response selection are more positive for the role of logic.

On April 1, 2016, at the Annual Meeting of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association, a book symposium, organized by Alyssa Ney, was held in honor of David Albert’s After Physics. De Neys offers a welcome departure from the dual-process accounts that have dominated theorizing about reasoning. However, we see little justification for retaining the distinction between intuition and deliberation. Instead, reasoning can be treated as a case of multiple-cue decision making. Reasoning phenomena can then be explained by decision-making models that supply the processing details missing from De Neys's framework.

Bilimcilik farklı disiplinlerde doğa bilimleri yöntemlerinin kullanılması gerektiğinin ileri sürüldüğü felsefî bir yaklaşımdır. Güvenilir bilgiyi sağlayabilecek yegâne yolun doğa bilimlerinin yöntemi olduğu iddiası nedeniyle bilimcilik metodolojik bir yaklaşımdır ve ontolojik önkabulleri içerir. Ancak bilimci argümanın zaman yönünden başlangıcı epistemik inanışların oluşumudur, bu nedenle bilimciliğe yönelik değerlendirme ve eleştirinin epistemolojiden başlaması makuldür. Zira bilimcilik öncelikle belirli bir konu hakkındaki inanışın neye dayandırılması gerektiği sorusunun bir cevabı olmak bakımından epistemolojik bir iddiadır. Bilimciliğin epistemik ilkesi bilgi kavramının sadece bilimsel bilgiden ibaret olduğudur. Bu (...) ilkenin kabulü ile kişi doğruya sadece doğa bilimleri aracılığıyla ulaşılabileceğini önvarsayar. Ancak doğa bilimlerinin konu edindiği olgu dünyası ile insan zihni arasındaki bilgi için temel sayılan ilişki, felsefî kabuller ve kavramlar tarafından biçimlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada bilginin kazandığı doğru nitelemesi ve bilimsel bilgide doğrunun bir dogma haline gelmesi, kökenleriyle birlikte tartışılacaktır. Bu hususta Karl Popper'ın yanlışlamacı bilim imgesinin anlatıldığı bu çalışmada ikili bir yol izlenecektir. İlki; Popper'ın neye, neden karşı çıktığı üzerine, ikincisi ise bu karşı çıkış sonucunda açılan boşluğun nasıl doldurulduğudur. Dolayısıyla birinci aşama Popper açısından geleneksel imgeye yapılan bir kritik niteliğinde olurken, ikinci aşama ise Poppercı bilim imgesinin serimlendiği bölümü oluşturacaktır. Nihayetinde Popper yenilikleriyle bilimsel düşünüşe yeni bir soluk getirirken, son bölümde sisteminin (...) ne gibi eksiklikler barındırdığı tartışılacaktır. Bu eksiklikler ise Ayer ve Duhem-Quine tezi ile sırasıyla yanlışlamanın mantıksal olarak imkânsızlığı ve kuramın yanlışlanmasında holistik yaklaşımın gerekliliğini kapsayacaktır. (shrink)

Bu makale, Mâtürîdî’nin ahlak düşüncesinde ahlaki mükellefiyetin kaynağını tespit etmeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu amaçla, ilk olarak onun yazılarında bulunan ahlaka ilişkin kavram türlerinin bir sınıflaması sunulmuştur. Bu noktada üç temel kavram tespit edilmiştir: Fayda, Erdem ve Hak. Ancak bunlardan hak kavramı, ahlaki mükellefiyetin nihai temsilcisi olarak görülmektedir, çünkü ahlakın nesnel olması için bize temel olan kategorik emir kavramını tek başına sunmaktadır. Ardından ahlaki mükellefiyetin iki ana kaynağına yer verilmiştir. Biri vahiy, diğeri ise akıldır. Vahiy emir ve nehiylerle beraber ilahi rubûbiyet ve (...) hakimiyet mefhumlarını sunarken, akıl aynı zamanda ahlâk anlayışımızı objektif mebdelerle belirlemekte ve vahiy öğretilerini desteklemektedir. Bu, ahlak alanında aklın bulgularının genellikle vahiy ile uyumlu olduğu anlamına gelir; farklılık gösterdikleri yerlerde, çoğunlukla insanlığın bilgiye erişiminin olmaması, onların doğru sonuçlara ulaşmasını imkansız kılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Mâtürîdî, ayrıca vahyin özellikle karanlık ve tartışmalı ahlak alanlarında gerekli olduğunu, çünkü vahyin, yokluğu halinde insanların kesin olarak bilemeyeceği yanıtlar sunduğuna dikkat çeker. Aynı zamanda tabiî hukuk teorisi doğrultusunda aklın bir mükellefiyet kaynağı olduğu ve dolayısıyla bu teorinin Mâtürîdî düşüncesinin kategorize edilmesinde temel bir yol olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Buna göre doğal dünya akla rehberlik eder ve o, insanın temel ihtiyaçları ve arzuları doğrultusunda ahlaki sonuçların çıkarılabileceği bir bilgi kaynağıdır. Özellikle Mâtürîdî, barış ve refahın insanlığın temel amacı olduğunu ve bunun ancak bir esasla sağlanabileceğini belirtmektedir. Bununla birlikte, Tanrı dünyanın yaratıcısı ve tasarımcısı olduğundan, Tanrı’nın bilgeliğini merkeze alan bir teoloji içinde, müteâl olan ve ahlakı belirleyen temel prensip ilahi hikmettir. Makalenin üçüncü bölümünde ahlaki motivasyon konusuna değinilmektedir. Ahlaki motivasyon ise insanların neye göre ahlaklı davranabileceklerini anlamanın anahtarıdır. Diğer yandan çalışmada Mâtürîdî’nin, yalnızca eylemlerin sonuçlarını dikkate alarak değil aynı zamanda objektif sebeplerle harekete geçebileceğimizi ve eylemleri ahlaki olarak yargılayabileceğimizi gösterdiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Bunun sebebi aklın, eylemleri sadece gerçekliğin tesadüfi ve sübjektif yönlerine değil, aynı zamanda kategorik mebde ve emirlere dayanan kriterlere göre yargılamaya izin vermesidir. Bu çalışmanın son kısmında ise Mâtürîdî’nin, David Hume’un ortaya koyduğu olan-olması gereken uçurumunu aşma bağlamında aklın, ahlaki mükellefiyetler getirdiği ileri sürülmektedir. Böylece Mâtürîdî’ye göre ahlaki mükellefiyetin kaynağının sadece vahiy emirlerine dayanmadığı, aynı zamanda akıl prensiplerinden de kaynaklandığı anlaşılmaktadır. Bu ilkeler önemli ölçüde insan doğası ve doğal dünya üzerine yapılan gözlemlerden elde edilen sonuçların ürünüdür. (shrink)

The abstract description of a physical system is developed, along lines originally suggested by Birkhoff and von Neumann, in terms of the complete lattice of propositions associated with that system, and the distinction between classical and quantum systems is made precise. With the help of the notion of state, a propositional system is defined: it is remarked that every irreducible propositional system (of more than three dimensions) is isomorphic to the lattice of all closed subspaces of a Hilbert space constructed (...) on some division ring with involution. The propositional system consisting of a family of separable complex Hilbert spaces is treated as a particular case which is sufficiently general to include both classical and quantum mechanics. The theory of the Galilean particle without spin is given as an illustration. Finally, the basis for the statistical interpretation of wave mechanics is developed with the help of Gleason's theorem. In an appendix, a proof of essentially the first part of Gleason's theorem is given which is a little different (perhaps more geometric) from that originally given by Gleason. (shrink)

Kur’an-ı Kerim, dili ve üslubu açısından diğer kitaplardan farklı bir özelliğe sahip olması münasebetiyle hicrî ilk asırdan itibaren çeşitli araştırmalara konu olmuştur. Özellikle kime veya neye delalet ettiği belirsiz olan müphem hususların ve zamirlerin tayininde tefsirin sistemleşme döneminden itibaren eserler telif edilmiştir. Söz konusu belirsizlikler, tefsir ilminin gelişim sürecinden sistemleşme dönemine kadar özel bir ilgi alanı olarak ortaya çıkmış ve tarihi süreç içerisinde artan bir ilgi görmüştür. Ancak, bu alandaki araştırmaların daha sağlıklı sonuçlar verebilmesi için klasik yöntem ve kaynakların yanında (...) bağlamsal bilgiyi dikkate alan yöntemler ve okumalar da gereklidir. Kur’an ilimlerinde müphem hususların konusu olan zamirlerin mercii sorunu da bu çerçevede ele alınabilir. Araştırmamızın konusunu oluşturan Bakara sûresinin 146. ayeti ve En‘âm sûresinin 20. ayetinde bulunan zamirlerdeki belirsizlik bu konudaki örnekler arasında sayılabilir. Her iki ayetin de bizim araştırmamıza konu olan kısmı, aynı ifadelerle zikredilmektedir. Bu ayetlerdeki müphemlik, Ehl-i kitabın kendi evlatlarını bildikleri gibi aynı şekilde tanıyıp bildikleri şeyin belirsizliğidir. Mealen “Onu çok iyi bilmektedirler” ifadesinde geçen zamirin tam olarak neye atıfta bulunduğu konusunda müfessirler arasında farklı görüşler ve gerekçelendirmeler ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu görüşlerin ve yorumların dayanakları, tefsir geleneğinde bir taraftan müphemlik kültürünün mümkün kıldığı anlam zenginliğine katkıda bulunurken, diğer taraftan tercih zorluğunu ortaya çıkaran ikilemlere neden olmuştur. Çalışmada, müfessirlerin zamirlerin referans noktasına dair görüşleri sadece sınıflandırılmakla yetinilmemiş, aynı zamanda Bakara ve En‘âm sûrelerinde geçen söz konusu ifadelerin aynı manaya gelme imkanı tartışılmıştır. Zira zikredilen zamirlerin içerisinde bulunduğu her iki ayet de aynı ifadelerden oluşmaktadır. Lafzî müteşâbih olarak adlandırılan bu durum, zamirlerin de aynı mercii karşılayabileceği ihtimalini barındırmaktadır. Bu yüzden makalede müfessirlerin görüşleri tercihlerin gerekçeleri bakımından da incelenmektedir. Aynı şekilde tefsir kitâbiyatında var olan bu görüşler, müfessirlerin kronolojisi dikkate alınarak liste halinde sunulmuştur. Bu sayede zamirlerin anlamına dair tercihlerde tefsir tarihinin farklı dönemlerinde kronolojik değişimlerin var olup olmadığı ortaya konulmuştur. Ayrıca zamirlerin isnadının belirlenmesinde ya da ihtilafları oluşturan görüşlerin gerekçelendirilmesinde bağlamsal bilgilerin nasıl bir rol oynadığı da örneklerle ele alınmaktadır. Bu sayede çalışmada genelde Kur’an’ı anlamada daha özelde ise zamirlerin isnadının tespitinde bağlam bilgisinin fonksiyonu somut bir şekilde görülebilecektir. (shrink)

In his own writings, Rawls purposively used only a loose characterization of the basic structure, but two prominent misinterpretations highlight the current need for a more detailed account. First, G.A. Cohen argues that the Rawlsian focus on the basic structure is arbitrary due to the Rawlsian appeal to profound effects. Second, some theorists conflate the justification of coercion with the assessment of a basic structure by defining the basic structure as the coercive structure. Both misinterpretations can be corrected by carefully (...) specifying what social institutions are and explaining which social institutions come together to form the basic structure of society. A defining characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease is difficulty in retrieving semantic memories, or memories encoding facts and knowledge. While it has been suggested that this impairment is caused by a degradation of the semantic store, the precise ways in which the semantic store is degraded are not well understood. Using a longitudinal corpus of semantic fluency data, we derive semantic network representations of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and of healthy controls. We contrast our network-based approach with analyzing fluency data with (...) the standard method of counting the total number of items and perseverations in fluency data. We find that the networks of Alzheimer’s patients are more connected and that those connections are more randomly distributed than the connections in networks of healthy individuals. These results suggest that the semantic memory impairment of Alzheimer’s patients can be modeled through the inclusion of spurious associations between unrelated concepts in the semantic store. We also find that information from our network analysis of fluency data improves prediction of patient diagnosis compared to traditional measures of the semantic fluency task. (shrink)

The academic literature in research ethics has been marked in the past decade by a much broader focus on the need for the protection of developing communities subjected to international clinical trials. Because of the proximity of the revision of the Declaration of Helsinki, completed in October 2008, most papers have addressed the issue of a double standard of care following the use of placebo. However, other no less important issues, such as interactions between the lifestyles structures of low-income communities (...) and the efficiency of risk-minimising procedures also deserve attention. The purpose of this paper is to discuss forms of uncertainty involved in clinical trials in poor and low-income countries that are not addressed by conventional methods of risk assessment. Furthermore, the increase in size of risks that are identified by conventional assessment methods will be addressed. Besides, the difficulty in properly applying risk-minimising procedures will be discussed. Finally, this paper proposes the involvement of research ethics committees in the risk evaluation process and the establishment of national ethics evaluation systems. (shrink)

In the majority of academic institutions nursing and medical students receive a traditional education, the content of which tends to be specific to their future roles as health care professionals. In essence, each curriculum design is independent of each course. Over the last decade, however, interest has been accumulating in relation to interprofessional and multiprofessional learning at student level. With the view that learning together during their student training would not only encourage and strengthen future collaboration in practice settings but (...) also enhance patient care, the University of Dundee decided to run a pilot study to explore shared teaching in ethics between medical and nursing students. This article presents a report on the reasons for selecting health care ethics as a precursor for shared teaching, the educational tool used for the sessions, and the results of student and facilitator evaluation of the short course. Overall, despite problems such as poor attendance by some students, and facilitation and timetable difficulties, most of the feedback from students and facilitators has been positive. In essence the ‘idea’ has gone from strength to strength and there are now three levels of shared teaching in ethics between nursing and medical students, with plans to include further sessions with students from other disciplines. Within the text, ‘health care ethics’ will be referred to as ‘ethics’; nursing students/nurses encompasses midwifery students/midwives. (shrink)

Chalmers' (2018) meta-problem of consciousness emphasizes unexpected common ground between otherwise incompatible positions. We argue that the materialist should welcome discussion of the meta-problem. We suggest that the core of the metaproblem is the seeming arbitrariness of subjective experience. This has an unexpected resolution when one moves to an interventionist account of scientific explanation: the same interventions that resolve the hard problem should also resolve the meta-problem.

Any theory of information needs to comply with what we call the implementation, formalization, and representation constraints. These constraints are justified by basic considerations concerning scientific modelling and methodology. In the first part of this paper, we argue that the implementation and formalization constraints cannot be satisfied because the relation between Shannon information and IIT must be clarified. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the representation constraint. We argue that IIT cannot succeed in satisfying this constraint (...) for semantic contents without offering models for concepts, conceptual roles, and context sensitivity. In the final part of the paper, further complications are raised with respect to the distinction between consciousness and attention, which apply more specifically to the representation constraint. We conclude with some recommendations as to how IIT may succeed in solving these problems, highlighting the advantages and enormous potential of IIT as a scientific theory. (shrink)

The Holocaust marks a decisive moment in modern suffering in which it becomes almost impossible to find meaning or redemption in the experience. In this study, C. Fred Alford offers a new and thoughtful examination of the experience of suffering. Moving from the Book of Job, an account of meaningful suffering in a God-drenched world, to the work of Primo Levi, who attempted to find meaning in the Holocaust through absolute clarity of insight, he concludes that neither strategy works well (...) in today's world. More effective are the day-to-day coping practices of some survivors. Drawing on testimonies of survivors from the Fortunoff Video Archives, Alford also applies the work of Julia Kristeva and the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicot to his examination of a topic that has been and continues to be central to human experience. There is a long history, dating back to the 50s, which examines the manner in which team roles contribute to effective team performance. However, much of this work has been built on ad-hoc teams working together for short periods of time under conditions of minimal stress. Additionally, research has been conducted with little attention paid to the importance of temporal factors, despite repeated calls for the importance of considering time in team research (e.g., Mohammed, Hamilton, & Lim, 2009). To begin (...) to understand team roles and how temporal aspects may impact the types of team roles employed when teams are working in extreme mission critical environments, the current manuscript uses a data-driven, bottom-up approach. Specifically, we employ the use of retrospective historical data as our input and a historiometric approach (Simonton, 2003). Source documents consist primarily of autobiographies, memoires, biographies, and first-hand accounts of crew interaction during spaceflight. Critical incidents regarding team interaction were extracted from these source documents and independently coded for team roles by two trained raters. Results of the study speak to the importance of task and social roles within teams that are predominantly intact and operating in extreme environments where mistakes can be life threatening. Evidence for the following task (i.e., coordinator, boundary spanner, team leader, evaluator, critic, information provider, team player, and innovator) and social roles (i.e., team builder, nurturer, harmonizer, entertainer, jokester, and the negative roles of attention seeker and negativist) were found. While it is often task roles that receive the greatest attention, results point to the importance of not neglecting the socioemotional health of the team (and the corresponding roles). Results also indicated that while some roles were consistently enacted independent of temporal considerations (e.g., mission length), the degree to which others were enacted varied across missions of differing lengths. Additionally, based on the current sample we see the following trends: (1) increased enactment of the team builder role as mission duration increases, (2) prominence of the entertainer role, and (3) increased emphasis on the visionary/problem solver role on missions over two years. We extend the work of Ivancovsky et al. by proposing that in addition to novelty seeking, mood regulation goals – including enhancing positive mood and repairing negative mood – motivate both creativity and curiosity. Additionally, we discuss how the effects of mood on state of mind are context-dependent (not fixed), and how such flexibility may impact creativity and curiosity.

Bizarre delusions are not specific to schizophrenia and can be found in other psychotic disorders. However, to date, there are no studies investigating socio-demographic and clinical characteristics associated with BizD across the psychosis spectrum. In this study 819 subjects with a diagnosis of SZ, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar I disorder were included. Patients with history of BizD and with no BizD were compared with respect to socidemographic and clinical variables, and predictors of BizD were explored. Patients with BizD were less (...) educated, less likely to be married, had higher Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale negative scores and lower Young Mania Rating Scale scores. Younger age, SZ and SZA diagnoses, higher PANSS positive scores, presence of reference delusions, tactile and olfactory hallucinations were predictors. Our results indicate that BizD are associated with higher illness severity, lower functionality and specific set of symptoms. (shrink)
